What is gold filled?"
Contrary to popular belief, gold filled is not something filled with gold. It's exactly the opposite. It's gold filled with base metal. A tube of 14 karat (or other karat) gold is permanently bonded to a inner core of base metal, usually copper. By law, gold filled has to be at least 1/20th of the weight of the finished metal, so gold filled has a lot more gold than gold plate which only has to be a few microns thick. Because the whole outside of the metal is 14 karat gold, everything you see and that touches your skin in gold filled jewelry is actually 14 karat gold. So gold filled works well for many people with sensitive skin! Gold filled is much sturdier than gold plate and doesn't flake and peel and it's tarnish resistant. So it's a great economical alternative to the price of solid gold or the short-lived gold plate."
